Working in Spittal for Spittal

This site is intended to be a means for the Spittal Improvement Trust to communicate more effectively with the community. This site will facilitate two way communication between the Trust and the people of Spittal.

With your continued help and support we can make Spittal a place everyone can be proud of, a safe and friendly place for all.

WELCOME

Welcome to our website, we hope you find it to be informative and interesting. Spittal Improvement Trust is made up of local residents and supporters trying to raise funds to bond community spirit and enhance our environment.

Spittal Improvement Trust logo

Opposite is our logo, not to be confused with a battleship or an ink blot, it is in fact a silhouette of Spittal point with the last remaining chimney loved by some hated by others.

Please feel free to browse the sections below, by selecting one of the headings inside the different colour sections. We endeavour to keep the site up to date and we will be posting some more photographs of community and fund raising events.

This event is being organised by Spittal Improvement Trust (SIT), a voluntary group in Spittal, Berwick-Upon-Tweed, working in partnership with Berwick Borough Council and the local community.

What we are asking people is: “Do you remember going to the Seaside in the summer when you spent your day playing games on the beach; watching Punch and Judy Shows and other street entertainers; visiting the fairground; listening to the bands in the park; having picnics; playing in the sea and in the paddling pools –just generally having a fun filled day at the seaside - you do?”

The Festival will provide a wide variety of activities and entertainment for all ages. Outdoor cafés on the Promenade will give a Continental feel to the weekend whilst people will be able to have a go at, what some might call, extreme sports on the beach.

SIT have gained the support of other groups /organisations within Berwick who will also be hosting events over the same weekend. Bridge Street Fair will held on the Sunday (10th), Civic Society are to open some of the historic buildings within the Town, Slow Food Group will be selling their products, Berwick Wildlife Group are to undertake ‘Rock Pool safaris’, Ramblers will conduct walks over the cliffs. The extent of activities provided by local groups will expand closer to the event

The Festival is to be advertised from York to Edinburgh/Glasgow and across the Borders and Northumberland. From the national publicity Berwick recently attracted during a poll to ask if Berwick should remain in England or go back to Scotland we are certainly “on the map“!

The success of this Festival will benefit not only Berwick but the Borders and Northumberland due to the large number of tourists that we will attract from an extensive advertising campaign - we anticipate 5000 visitors per day.

THE TRUST

SIT was formed in 1998 out of concerns expressed by the local community with regard to the continuing decline in Spittal. A comprehensive questionnaire was sent around the community which sought to identify the generally held views, Spittal Point and the future of its old industrial chimney seemed to be foremost in people’s minds. Initially SIT also included the Highcliffe and Eastcliffe estates, situated on the hill above the main village, but they amicably separated out after the first couple of years as they felt their agenda was largely different to the main village.

SIT’s area of interest is bounded by the seashore to the east, the main railway line to the west, by Hud’s Head to the south and Carr Rock and its Lifeboat Station to the north. SIT’s aims are to carry out project works in an effort to halt the further decline in our local facilities, improve the environment we live in and to raise community spirit by holding events.

The current committee for the year 2007/08 is:

GEORGE WEIDMANN (CHAIR)
MAUREEN (MAU) WATKINS (VICE CHAIR)
TOMMY WILSON (TREASURER)
MIKE GREENER (SECRETARY)
TRACY BELL
HAZEL BETTISON
JOHN HARRISON
ALAN JOHNSTON
TONY LANGMACK
AMANDA MacDONALD
DOROTHY SLATER
DAVID STEWART

PROJECTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

the greenSIT have tackled various projects in its relatively short life. These range from offering every household free planted window boxes, improving the areas around the trees on Main Street, producing a well received and read newsletter, holding beach cleans to a £250,000 project to entirely replace and extend a play area and walled park adjacent to the Promenade. Currently we are completing another large project, the area around the Spa Well and War memorial. Every year we hold several varied events, the key ones being our Gala in June and a Christmas Fair.

We believe that a major achievement is that SIT can engage with the Borough Council, County Council and other groups, that we come into contact with, on equal terms and to the benefit of our community.

war memorialWe recently undertook another survey of the village by sending out a questionnaire so that we could gauge how the community’s interest in local concerns has changed since we first started. A satisfactory redevelopment of Spittal Point is still a major issue as is the increase in dog fouling on pavements, the Promenade and the beach. This latest questionnaire also gives us an idea of the projects and events that can take us forward.

If you have an idea for a future project or an event then please email info@spittalisgreat.co.uk
